Over the past 24 hours, Deacon Health has treated a number of students with symptoms of gastroenteritis, or the “stomach bug.” Gastroenteritis is a very contagious virus that causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and in some cases, fever and stomach pain. The symptoms reported by affected students have been mild and are not life-threatening. They usually resolve in about 24-48 hours.

What should I do if I develop symptoms?

  • Remain isolated to prevent the spread of infection until your symptoms have completely resolved. The virus usually lasts about 48 hours.
  • Wait at least one hour after an upset stomach before eating. Once your stomach is ready, follow a bland diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast/crackers) and avoid anything spicy or greasy. Limit citrus or tomato-based foods, and avoid alcohol or other substances.
  • Students experiencing persistent, severe vomiting or diarrhea should call Deacon Health at 336-758-5218 to speak with an on-call nurse, a personal health care provider, or an Urgent Care or emergency healthcare facility. Those with mild to moderate symptoms do not need to seek medical care.
  • Wash your hands with hot water and soap after using the restroom to prevent the spread of infection. Hand sanitizer may not effectively kill the virus that causes gastrointestinal symptoms. Do not prepare food for others until you have been well for at least two days.
  • Students, faculty and staff who are sick should not go to class, social events, or work if they are ill or in early recovery. Email your professor or supervisor to report illnesses and discuss accommodations for absences.

Limiting the spread of gastroenteritis

Facilities and Campus Services is implementing enhanced cleaning protocols with a focus on disinfecting all classrooms and public spaces, such as common areas and restrooms. In addition to these efforts, you can help prevent further illness by taking the following actions:

  • The most effective way to stop the spread is to practice good handwashing and personal hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and hot water for 20 seconds before eating, using the bathroom, or after handling any items touched by someone who has been ill.
  • Do not share food or beverages with others.
  • Get adequate rest and hydration.

As a reminder, in addition to regular clinic hours at Deacon Health, an on-call nurse is available 24/7 to assist students with current healthcare concerns during non-clinic hours. Students can call 336.758.5218 and follow the prompts. A list of off-campus providers is also available.
