I write today with additional updates on the residential experience for the 2020-2021 Academic Year. I hope these updates help provide some additional clarity about our plans.

Campus Occupancy

As previously announced, our communities will be configured such that we expect to offer approximately 65% single occupancy rooms and 35% double occupancy rooms. Below we share some additional details to assist students in their planning.

  • We are planning for first-year students to be housed in Poteat, Huffman, Taylor, and Efird Halls on the Quad in addition to our South Campus communities.
  • Most of our continuing student housing will operate at the same capacity as previous semesters, albeit at reduced overall availability on the Reynolda Campus.

Detailed housing configurations along with housing selection times will be released next Wednesday, July 15.

Course Modality and Housing

All students, regardless of course modalities are welcome to live in University housing. Students who are taking all of their courses online may also live at their permanent address; if this applies to you, please email us at so we can update your housing record. Students under the University’s residency requirement who want to live somewhere other than their permanent address will need to submit a petition to be released via our Housing Portal.

Estimated Charges and July Bill

All students will receive their first Fall 2020 bill next Wednesday, July 15. On this bill, you will notice two charges from the Office of Residence Life and Housing: one for estimated charges related to your housing, and another for the Base meal plan. These are assigned to students who fall under the University’s residency requirement and seniors who have indicated an on-campus intent and are based on the University’s Cost of Attendance.

Estimated housing charges will be removed and actual charges updated as students’ housing for the 2020-21 Academic Year is finalized; meal plans may be decreased prior to August 1, 2020, or increased until September 30, 2020 and charges adjusted accordingly.

Students who are not returning to Wake Forest are required to notify the Office of Academic Advising at Charges can only be adjusted once your departure is finalized and confirmed by Academic Advising.

Housing Portal and Application

Beginning, Monday, July 13, the Housing Application will be open for all students.

  • Incoming students who did not previously complete their housing application may do so at this time.
  • Continuing students (including transfers) may continue to update their housing application, submit housing intent (6+ semesters in housing), submit petitions to be released from the University’s residency requirement (<6 semesters in housing), and/or form/modify roommate groups.

Move-In Appointments

First-year students will be able to schedule their move-in appointment when first-year housing assignments are released on Friday, July 31. We look forward to welcoming our incoming students to campus Monday, August 17 through Thursday, August 20.

Continuing students will be able to select their move-in appointments as the final part of their housing selection process. Continuing student move-in will take place Thursday, August 20 through Monday, August 24.

Students Returning From Outside The United States

In accordance with CDC guidelines, any student returning from outside the United States will be expected to quarantine for 14 days prior to any in-person engagement with the University community.

  • Students living on-campus will be required to complete a 14-day quarantine prior to moving into fall semester housing. You should plan to arrive in Winston-Salem between August 7 and 10. Please email prior to August 1 to make arrangements for quarantine.
  • Students living off-campus will be required to complete a 14-day quarantine prior to any in-person engagement with the University. You are encouraged to plan your arrival to Winston-Salem such that you can complete quarantine prior to the academic semester beginning on August 26.

Finally, students returning from the following countries should be aware of additional regulations. “With specific exceptions, foreign nationals who have been in any of the following countries during the past 14 days may not enter the United States.”

  • China, Iran, Europe (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City), United Kingdom, Ireland, and Brazil

Students from any of the countries listed above will need to plan their travel so that they are able to spend at least 14 days outside the U.S. in a country not listed above. Per ISSS, international students in the F-1 or J-1 visa status may enter the U.S. up to 30 days prior to their I-20 or DS-2019 start date.

Important Dates

  • July 12: Deadline to submit a request for disability-related accommodation for housing/dining
  • July 15: Release of housing selection times and configurations
  • July 17: Students who have lived on campus for six semesters must declare their intent to live on- or off-campus
  • July 22: Decisions to be announced for any off-campus petitions submitted by July 10
  • July 23-July 24: Housing selection for roommate groups with a senior (Thursday) or junior (Friday) group leader
  • July 27-28: Housing selection for roommate groups with a sophomore group leader
  • July 31: First-year housing assignments released
  • August 17-20: New student move-in appointments
  • August 20-24: Continuing students move-in appointments
